Re: Adherence to the Rule of Law – Illegal Immigration
Dear Governor Pritzker, Mayor Johnson, President Preckwinkle, and Distinguished Officials:
As a dedicated public servant and Cook County Commissioner for the 17th District, I am reaching out to share my concerns and provide collegial advice on an issue of significant importance to our communities and our nation. It is imperative that as leaders, we remain steadfast in upholding the laws and principles that form the foundation of our democracy.
Each of us, upon assuming office, took an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States. This solemn commitment binds us to adhere to federal laws, including those addressing the obstruction of justice. Federal law under 18 U.S.C. Sections 1501-1521 explicitly outlines severe consequences for individuals who willfully obstruct, impede, or attempt to interfere with the administration of justice. Such actions are not only a violation of legal statutes but also a breach of public trust, with penalties that can increase based on the severity of the offense.
I urge you to proceed with caution and careful deliberation in all actions that may intersect with these laws. Both President Donald Trump and former ICE Director Thomas Homan have emphasized the critical importance of accountability in public office. It is essential that we, as public officials, ensure that our actions reflect the highest standards of ethical and legal conduct.
Furthermore, the principle of “E Pluribus Unum” underscores the value of unity through the rule of law. Our nation's fabric is built on the foundation of legal immigration and the privileges of American citizenship, which must be earned and safeguarded. The enforcement of immigration laws, including the return of known criminal migrants and the prosecution of those who commit crimes against American citizens, is not a controversial stance but a necessary measure to protect our communities.
We must respect and adhere to the rule of our nation's laws. As human beings, we must care for the well-being of the migrants who have arrived here beyond our cause. However, it is imperative that they be returned to their homes of origin in a dignified and humane manner. The current situation is financially unsustainable, further straining our already struggling resources intended for the well-being of our own citizens. Our financial capacity is not unlimited, and we must act now to prioritize the needs of American citizens first.
In conclusion, I respectfully request your continued vigilance and commitment to upholding the laws of our nation and ensuring the safety and well-being of our citizens. Let us work together to maintain public trust and honor the oaths we have taken.
Sincerely,
Commissioner Sean M. Morrison
